We had our last I-move on Tuesday. We had four terrific weeks up at Trapps. Thanks for having your kids dressed properly and thanks to those who helped out. We couldn’t do it without you!

Enjoy the weekend,

Math

The last two weeks of math focused on fractions and measurement. Students looked at fractions on a number line and learned how to make models to prove comparisons of two fractions.

The last module of this unit focused on measuring a beanstalk and its leaves, than using this data to make a line plot of the length of the leaves. Students practiced using a ruler to the quarter of an inch.

We finished up the unit by taking the end of the unit assessment and will start the new unit called Multiplication, Division and Area next week.

Writing

Students have been learning about persuasive writing. They have been looking at topics and working on reasons and elaboration which might support their thinking. On Thursday, the students picked their topics. Ask your child what topic they have picked and discuss with them why they picked this topic and what their plan is to support their position or opinion.

Science

We have started a new mini unit on Magnets. Students have been experimenting with various types of magnets and are discovering the push and pull of magnets and how magnets attract certain types of metals.

These valentines are okay but please remember to check to made sure they do not contain nuts.

If you would like to send in popcorn or a drink, just let me know. Treats are always appreciated!

Math

Last week, students finished up metric measurement. We explored mass, liquid volume and length. We finished the week by working on multi-step story problems involving measurement.

This week, students started to look at fractions. Our first lesson was to look at the size of the whole. Ask your child about the candy bar activity. Students then practiced folding same size wholes into halves, fourths, eighths, thirds and sixths and compared the unit fractions. We spent the rest of the week working on fractions on a number line.

Writing

We have started a new unit which will focus on persuasive writing. Students have been learning about what a persuasive piece is and how one might pick a topic. We have been discussing things that we might want to change and imaging a solution for that change. We also talked about opinion writing and how one might write about a noteworthy person and how they feel about that person.

Social Studies

Students are finishing up our unit on world geography by making maps. They could choose to make a map from the school to their house or from our classroom to the art room or another special room. The map includes symbols, a key and labels.

December 21st – Jan. 1st - Holiday Break

January 7th, 14th, 28th – iMove skiing at Trapps 11:30 -2pm

February 4th – iMove skiing at Trapps 11:30-2pm

Dear Parents,

We had a terrific holiday party! The homemade Secret Santa gifts were wonderfully creative and thoughtful. What great kids you have!

iMove will start the first full week we are back at school. Students will need to dress for the weather. It is often colder and windier at Trapps so students should overdress rather than underdress. They are welcome to bring a small water bottle but it must fit in a pocket (or a camelbak) so that it doesn’t interfere with skiing.
Students will have recess earlier in the day and therefore might want to bring in a second pair of dry gloves and socks for skiing. We will eat right before we leave and hope to be out the door and on the bus by 11:30. We will arrive back at school around 2pm.

Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday and a happy new year,

Kara
